3 Perspective Shifting Ideas During COVID-19
A lot of businesses, big and small, are struggling in the current COVID-19 pandemic. In a short few days many businesses across the world were forced to shut down or had their sales decline. Of course, this leads to economic struggle.
Business needs to adapt.
Actually, most of us business owners know that we need to adapt. For a small few of us, what we adapt into is obvious – but for most of us that answer isn’t immediately clear.
You might just need to shift your perspective during this pandemic. It is possible for you to make new sales and grow your business. There’s 3 things that business owners, employees, and consumers need to understand during this time.
1. Make Money by Solving Problems
When it comes to making money, there are two types of people:
- Scammers
- Problem Solvers
You are probably not a scammer! A scammer takes money but solves nothing. In fact, in doing so they cause you and society harm. They prey upon fear, insecurity, and ignorance. They are driven by greed.
No, you’re a business owner. You actually care about your customers. And you actually care about solving a problem.
So cut yourself a break. Making money by solving a problem in this time is not wrong. In fact, our economy depends more than ever on your unique problem solving skills. If you see a need, then fill that need. You can hold your community up in a time of struggle and make a profit. The two are not mutually exclusive.
It frustrates me when society villainizes business owners for earning off of a poor situation. Yes, there’s a right way to do it and a wrong way – letting the greater good + opportunity guide you is always the right way.
2. Waiting for it to “Blow Over” is Not a Plan
Just about every business is looking at their contingency funds and considering how long they can last. Nearly all of them are doing their best to keep their people employed.
But the clock is ticking.
Yes, government is providing new benefits every day. At worst, that actually tricks you into thinking you might be able to wait it out. Of course you should leverage the programs available. However, waiting for it to “blow over” is still not a plan.
You need to adjust your business now.
Who knows? Maybe you can outlast the virus and go back to business as you’ve always done it. Relying on a “maybe” is foolish. Relying on a “maybe” is not looking out for your employees and customers. A struggling business is bad for everyone.
Now is the time to make real changes to your business. Now is your only chance to adjust your business model for today’s needs.
As a marketer and a business owner myself, I can’t help but try to find the parts of my client’s business that could flourish in this time:
- For dentists, that means ramping up your emergency services.
- For equipment leasing companies, that’s helping equipment owners turn their business equipment into cash.
- For private career schools, that’s moving to online distance learning models.
- For restaurants, that’s focusing on safe food delivery.

3. Keep Spending
Yes, we need you to keep spending money.
That’s how the economy works. You spend money in businesses, they hire people to meet the demand, employees get money to spend.
Obviously, you do have to take care of your finances as well. I’m not asking you to spend stupidly. Instead, purchase those services and products that improve your current situation. The businesses that adapt for your needs should be rewarded with your purchases.
Of course, keep supporting your local charity, get take out from your favourite restaurant, and shop for what you need. These businesses depend on you. Let’s all do our part to “flatten the curve” for both infections and economic downturn.
